What Is Virtualization Management?

As you may have already suspected, virtualization management refers to the management of virtualization technologies. Specifically, it’s the act of monitoring the many different parts that make up a virtualized environment. Virtualization management refers also refers to the performance aspects of virtualization tools; some of these include: gathering statistics which are used to increase performance and efficiency, fine tuning for better performance, managing configurations, and discovering and solving any problems.

Virtualization Management “Winners”

There are many prominent vendors within the virtualization management space. Some of the operations management companies that are considered to be “winners” include companies like: VMware, Zenoss, VMTurbo, Veeam, Reflex Systems, Quest Software, and Hotlink.

Why Virtualization Management?

One of the main reasons organizations turn to virtualization solutions is because they do not want to deal with the mistakes that are frequently made while managing their physical environments. Virtualization management is responsible for a mistake-free experience in the virtualization environments, which key players are looking for.

Some people think that virtualization makes monitoring easier. The truth is that it makes it more complex and the need for virtualization management is greater.

The reason virtualization makes monitoring more complex is because while it does reduce the number of physical servers, the number of VMs, operating systems, and applications that run within the VMs is about the same. Not to mention it adds many new components to the process as a whole. Some of these new components include: service consoles, hypervisors, vSwitches, resource pools, clusters, and many more.

It is also misunderstood that resource reservation will provide complete security against one VM interfering with another. Because this is not true, the need for virtualization management is also necessary.

Another reason virtualization management is greatly needed is because virtualization platform do not include all of the metrics and tools that are necessary for smooth and efficient operation. While most come with some tools and metrics to monitor and increase performance, they certainly don’t come standard with the tools and metrics you really need to use it correctly. With virtualization management software and support, you are sure to have everything you could ever need to run smoothly.

Virtualization Management Taking Shape

The virtualization management industry really started to take shape this year and it is expected to grow significantly in 2012 due to various partnering that will take place in an effort to compete with VMware. With the great demand for this solution, it can only be expected to get better.
